Track 1 – Open The Door

(sound of rain, the door being opened and Tokito running in)

Tokito: Wah! It's pouring out! Damn!

Kubota: It came suddenly, didn't it?

(Sound of the door slamming, then Tokito taking his shoes off and brushing the rain off of him)

Tokito: The Weather Lady said that today would be nice weather all day long.

Kubota: Even the Weather Lady couldn't have read this great of a downpour. Here, a towel.

Tokito: Un, thank you. Ahhh! I'm cold!

(Sound of Tokito drying his hair off)

Kubota: Please be sure to put that in the drier. I'm glad I turned on the heater.

(sound of Tokito putting his clothes in the drier and turning it on)

Tokito: I'm hungry. I haven't eaten since this morning.

Kubota: Then, yesterday's curry...

Tokito: Curry? Curry again?

Kubota: If you don't like it, I won't give it to you.

Tokito: Ah! No way! Cheers for Curry! Waah! It's curry! It's Curry!!~~

Kubota: I'll heat it up, so please wait.

(Sound of curry boiling)

Tokito: Kubo-chan...

Kubota: Hmm?

Tokito: Kubo-chan... It seems you dislike rain...

Kubota: Why do you think that?

Tokito: Sometimes, it's like you're looking at a different place.

Kubota: Where?

Tokito: I don't know, but...

Kubota: How? If you think so, then it must be like that, for sure.

Tokito: What's up with that?

Kubota: Because I don't really understand myself. Surely you know.

Tokito: Kubo-chan...

Kubota: Hmm?

Tokito: I'm going to be here throughout it all...

Kubota: Yeah. I know.

Tokito: Oh! You! What's with that attitude? Be a little happy!

Kubota: But it's you, isn't it? You understand my ways well...

Track 2 – Card 01

(Sound of Tokito running, panting, Sound of traffic in the background)

Man 1: Bastard!

Man 2: Everyone, come here!

Tokito: Shit...

Man 3 : There he is!

Man 2: Grab him. That's a dead end.

Kubota voice over: My cat died. I was around middle school age. Really, it wasn't that I was keeping him, he was probably a stray cat. Frankly speaking, I don't really remember his body shape. The feeling of his soft warm body and his supple hair... truly, that was all. He wasn't named. I found his corpse on my homeward journey as the sun was setting. A stray dog probably did it, the flowing blood and intestines that shined with a dull black luster seemed to block the sidewalk. In the black holes where he lost his eyeballs, a deep and thorough eternity of darkness extended. If it was tomorrow and this trash was collected, no traces of his death would remain. Gripping him in my thin and narrowed arms, I lifted him. His dangling body was distortedly rigid, one soul lighter, without the suppleness of life. He probably had been born to die in this way. Though I wasn't a prophet, I had a hunch, and suddenly a laugh welled up in my throat. “Someday, I too will die with my guts scattered.” Yep, for example, in this manner.

(Sounds of the city, a boat in the background)

Komiya voice over: The year 1995, Yokohama. This is a town that mixes Chaos and Order. On the surface it looks like a normal place to live nowadays, but if you take into consideration the various people, incidents of crime seem to swirl into the mix, always waiting on the other side of the surface. Prostitutes waiting here for fat mouthed sailors. There's the treat of the decline of industries, and to fill in that emptiness in Japan is the Chinese. Various people, various businesses, all the same people in the same town. And then, of course, there's us. The Yakuza. My name is Komiya Nobuo. When this neighborhood was overthrown, I became second in command of the Izumokai's youth group. Then that day, Branch Chief Sanada said he wanted me to meet the new leader, and I met with him as usual. With reluctance, I met with the two of them. I waited until the appointed time reluctantly, with a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. The man that the Mahjong club's manager lead in to meet us was named Kubota.

Kubota: Eh, the Izumokai, right? I knew that you were managing this store's mahjong's parlor, but I never really had a reason to want to join.

Sanada: Of course that was obvious when I asked you. Here, we've put together a junior division in order to find young members. And opportunely, you could say, the leader's position has become vacant.

Komiya voice over: This guy was normal looking, with a slender build, tall, and wore glasses... No matter how you looked at him, he didn't seem the type to involve himself in this sort of job. Of course, you can't tell a book by the cover, but in the Yakuza, that doesn't mean anything. You especially need a sort of presence that he really didn't have. At first glance, he seemed like an easy-going guy. As to why the Branch Chief said he wanted this man as leader, I had no clue.

Kubota: The atmosphere in this room doesn't seem like you're asking me, but...

Sanada: The rumor that you aren't a timid man seems to be true. Also, it seems that the youth of the organization adore you.

Kubota: Hmmm. I don't really...

Komiya: Branch Chief Sanada! I am opposed! This sort of newbie bastard shouldn't be raised to that position...!!

Sanada: Komiya. You are only the vice chief of the junior division. How you can give me advice given your standing is something you should think over well.

Kubota: Um... Can I leave now? I haven't had lunch yet...

Sanada: They called you Kubota-kun, right? You really do have a striking hand. In this world, there are many different types of Mahjong players. In the outside world, people never get to see this type of interaction, of the ones with a striking hand. How about it? Won't you mix Mahjong tiles with us?

(Kubota makes a unsure sound)

Sanada: Good eyes. That's the innate disposition of a gambler. Let's get to the main point.

(Sound of Sanada getting into his drawer, and placing 2 guns on the table.)

Sanada: Here are 2 pistols. One of them is the real thing and the other is a “defective product”. When you pull it's trigger, it will accidentally discharge. And so...

(Sound of door being kicked in)

Man: Hey! Get in there!

(Sound of man being pushed in the room. Sounds from the man, who is gagged and panting.)

Sanada: One month ago, this man was the junior division's leader. I'm sorry to say, he was identified as a spy for our long time enemy the Toujou organization. What's this? He seems to have been born without having his name entered into the family registry. If he were to disappear, there'd be no difficulties. Won't you show us your skill?

(Kubota exhales)

Kubota: So in other words, you're saying to pick one of these guns and kill him?

Sanada: With a 50% probability your arm will be blown off.

Kubota: A change of ownership ritual? What a significant whim. Really I have no interest in being a part of this.

(Sound of gun being cocked, and the prior leader panicking. Then, a slight sigh from Kubota)

Kubota: Without my dominant arm, I won't be able to play Mahjong...

Komiya voice over: As if he were pointing a flashlight, this guy pointed the gun at the leader. At that time, deep in his glasses it was cold. In that instant, with efficiency and cold reason, his spirit showed.

(Gunshot, then the bullet casing hitting the floor.)

Kubota: uwaa! That totally resounded in my bones.

(Sound of Sanada clapping.)

Sanada: I see. You seem like a man beyond rumor, Kubota-kun. Allow us to buy that power. From now on I entrust you to the supreme command of the youth group. I'll also give you freedom with money and lust.

Kubota: Thanks for that.

Komiya: Cool!! He didn't even flinch at killing someone... What guts!

Kubota: Not really.

Komiya voice over: That...

Kubota: It's just affection for myself.

Komiya voice over: was how I met Kubota-san.

(short silence)

Komiya voice over: That afternoon, Kubota-san went with Branch Chief Sanada on the collection rounds, and then for a little while we didn't see him. After that, for about a week, he made a figure of himself at the office. Like it was bothersome to show up, he didn't do anything, just lazing around on the sofa all day. Then, when the day ended, he'd go home as if was just as bothersome. Nevertheless, he'd show his face at the office everyday, impartially. But then, there was a day that, suddenly and uncharacteristically, he didn't. The last thing I had heard,

Kubota: Ahhh. In spite of my hopes for Mahjong, there really isn't anyone here good enough.

Komiya: That's what he said.

(silence, then sound of someone sitting down)

Komiya: He hasn't come lately, Kubota-san that is.

Yakuza 1: Maybe he lost interest?

Yakuza 2: Probably.

Yakuza 3: I don't know what he's thinking, that guy...

(sound of the door opening, and Kubota walking in)

Kubota: Hiya.

Komiya: Ku... Kubota-san!!

Kubota: The television here isn't really a good terminal, but...

Komiya voice over: After three days of being absent, Kubota shows up carrying a large paper bag in his arms.

(sound of the bag being set down)

Komiya: What's that?

Kubota: You don't know? A Saturn, a play station, and a superfamicon.

Komiya: I know that, but...

(Sounds of Kubota hooking up the game systems)

Kubota: Well, since a game I wanted just went on sale I was busy for 3 days. I thought maybe it was bad that I hadn't shown up here.

Komiya thought: That's what he says, but is it normal to bring those into a Yakuza office?

Kubota: Therefore... A competition. If you can take one victory from me, I'll treat you to anything and everything.

Yakuza 1: Serious, Kubota-san?!

Yakuza 2: Me! I'm the first player!

Yakuza 3: Me too!

(silence, then the sound of Komiya walking down metal stairs, sound of an air conditioner running in the background)

Komiya: Kubota-san. You're back here?

(Sound of Kubota taking a draw on his cigarette)

Kubota: What, is practice already over?

Komiya: No matter how long we practice, we still won't gain victory over you. Everyone knows that well.

Kubota: Well, you don't win that sort of thing by skill alone.

Komiya: Huh?

Kubota: It's a simulation, a special one.

Kubota: What will your opponent do in the next fight? If this is his attack, what's your retaliation? If you calculate and move while watching your opponents habits and timing, you'll win. It's the same thing with Mahjong or Hanafuda. If you're up against a human opponent, a hundred ways will appear when there are a hundred people.

(Kubota takes a puff from his cigarette)

Kubota: Well, that's why it doesn't take much skill to win at games like pachinko, without human opponents.

Komiya: So what you're saying, Kubota-san, is that you persist at a useless competition.

Kubota: Seems so. If I'm not facing a living person, how will I know that I myself am living?

(Silence, then the sound of Kubota kicking his shoe off)

Kubota: Or something like that. Ah, tomorrow it should be clear. The laundry will dry, won't it?

Komiya voice over: That murdering man, with a carefree expression, talked about tomorrow's weather.

Track 3 – Dice 2

Komiya voice over: Kubota-san seemed like a dilliante at the office for over 2 weeks. Even though nothing came up, he didn't do anything, either. Up until now there were too many days when nothing changed. It was bad, too much of nothing. It wasn't really that he was putting on airs of being leader, it's that he wasn't giving anyone orders. He had become a leader that didn't really pay any attention to relations between superiors and inferiors, as if he had left the group yesterday. He even ignored the office's rules entirely. He could do things like that, but somehow or another while being a murderer that bailed out on his Yakuza seat, there were times that I became worried that he would say “But, isn't this a good thing?” It's just... even that was just from thinking about things idly too much, I thought vaguely.

Shuuji: Owowowowow! Shit! That bastard acted like he was mocking me!!

Yakuza 1: You ok, Shuuji?

Shuuji: Yeah... my front two teeth are broken.

Kubota: What's with him?

Komiya: Turns out the girl Shuuji picked up was the girlfriend of some young guy in the Toujou gang. He was deep into her, and it looks like the guy beat the shit out of him.

Kubota: Hmmm. Ah, I really don't know much about this. What sort of connection is between the Toujou gang and the Izumokai?

Komiya: From Yokohama's western intersection to here is our strip. Across that street is Toujou's, at least it's understood implicitly... Originally, our organization and Toujou's areas were both separated from the Minatokai Branch family. The new separations became lawless areas of the Chinese Mafia. After the Blue Dragon Sword incident, both families distributed their territories as if they had been driven into corners. And.... Are you listening?

Kubota: Yeah, I'm listening, I'm listening. How troublesome...

Shuuji: Shit. I really am gonna kill that bastard.

Kubota: Would you cut it out? If you take other people's things, you can't complain if you're bitten.

Shuuji: That's...

Yakuza 1: But, Kubota-san...

(Sound of the door opening, and Sanada's footsteps.)

Sanada: You're extremely lively...

Komiya: Sanada-san!

Yakuza in harmony: Morning!!

Sanada: Thanks.

Komiya voice over: Following after Chief Sanada was a large, black shape. It was the chief's pet dog. It was well disciplined, always sitting when it didn't have any orders, not wagging it's tail or stirring at all. He was an animal that would follow after his master in silence, eerily, even when there was another dog that didn't have people around. But, when it was given orders by a person, without stopping for anything, it would tear out the opponent's throat. A wild animal that had been trained. The same as us.

Sanada: How is it, Kubota-kun? Are you becoming a little familiar with things?

Kubota: Yeah... Though I haven't really done anything in particular.

Sanada: That's because it's only been two weeks. With a big job...

Komiya voice over: Kubota-san, while listening to Boss Sanada continue to talk, came close to that dog and extended his hand out to it. The strange thing was, the dog was always obedient even when doing something it hated. But it suddenly sniffed at Kubota, learning his smell.

Sanada: He doesn't really like people... Do you like dogs?

Kubota: I like animals. What's his name?

Sanada: It's “Ark”.

Kubota: Ah, the brand of your cigarettes.

Sanada: Have I smoked in front of you?

Kubota: “Ark Royal”. They have a characteristic smell. The other day, when I went to the office, I smelled vanilla.

Sanada: You're an interesting man, just as I thought...

Komiya: Sanada-san. What sort of official business did you come here for today?

Sanada: Naw, just seeing how you all were holding up. From here, I was going to visit the “Shops” that our house sponsors. You wanna come with me, Kubota-kun?

Kubota: I'll pass.

Sanada: As usual. Do you dislike women?

Kubota: Not really. I'm just not interested.

Sanada: Then, men?

Kubota: Not really.

Sanada: Humans?

(Long pause)

Kubota: Not really.

Komiya voice over: Sometimes, I got the feeling that I didn't understand this person. As if he were grasping at clouds or fog, I stared at him.

(Silence, then the sound of the door opening.)

Komiya: Hiya. Huh? Kubota-san?

Yakuza 1: He hasn't come yet today...

Komiya: Shuuji, your face looks interesting.

Yakuza 2: It seems his broken front teeth have become infected.

Shuuji: Ah – Shit! Every time I remember it, it pisses me off. Really, even if those guys apologized, I won't be satisfied.

Yakuza 2: I thought Kubota-chan told you to cut it out.

Shuuji: But Komiya-san, isn't the gossip recently that those guys have started doing business in our territory? If we don't punish them, they'll feel good about it, those guys.

Komiya: That's true...

Komiya voice over: It really was like he said. It was the truth, the Toujou group these days pestering us by selling drugs in our areas. It was my place to help our people. However... Since we had been told not to make any moves against them by our leader, there was nothing we could do to help. We couldn't do anything but sit and twiddle our fingers.

Yakuza 1: By the way, I wonder why Sanada-san brought an ordinary guy like Kubota-san into our group.

Komiya: huh?

Yakuza 1: But it's strange, isn't it? Suddenly raised as the leader of the youth division...

Komiya: Certainly...

Shuuji: How desperately Sanada-san supports Kubota-san, don't you think?

Yakuza 1: He said he's not interested in women, just that is suspicious.

Shuuji: Gyaa- Makes me sick!!

Komiya: Shut up! Stupid!

Shuuji: ow!

Komiya voice over: I understood the next day, the reason that Kubota-san didn't come to the office that day.

Yakuza 2: Hey, did you hear? I heard that someone half-killed that one Toujou guy...

Shuuji: Serious!?

Yakuza 2: It seems that his cervical vertebrae were broken, all his fingernails were torn out, and he can't speak.

Kubota: Hmmm. Was he bitten?

(Yakuza gasps)

Kubota: Ah, but as I thought, that's that. Humans are animals too, aren't they?

Komiya: Kubota-san...

Kubota: Hmmm?

Komiya: The criminal who did that to the Toujou group guy...

Kubota: Hmmm?

Komiya: Uh, no... Nevermind.

Komiya voice over: I don't know why, but... He hadn't said anything, but... There was no mistaking that the person who did that to the Toujou group guy was this man. I was certain of that.

(Sound of a gunshot, then memories)

Kubota: Not really. It's just affection for myself.

Komiya voice over: Around then, I saw the other side of that easygoing face that seemed like he couldn't harm a fly, and understood.

Kubota: Ah, did you know about this? A conference on how you can return to health by standing every day for 15 minutes as many times as possible. I wonder if it really works... Maybe the office would foot the bill...

Komiya voice over: This man... I thought that this man called “Kubota Makoto” was a contradictory man. Though he seemed to have interest in nothing, his curiosity was strong. He said he didn't care about anything, but there appeared to be something that he wants. While saying “It's just affection for myself.”, he tortures himself. If I thought there was anything he was attached to, I'd feel that there was nothing that he needed. Mixing “Chaos” and “Order”, nothing is produced, and it becomes nothing. I thought he was a man like this city.

Track 4 – Dice 3

Komiya voice over: Kubota-san didn't waste any time on it, as if it had been just a show for the police. Even though I say that, it wasn't that he was particularly hiding it. It was just that he hadn't been outrageous up until now. While Sanada-san had Kubota-san waiting for a big job, though I couldn't say that he wasn't a carefree man, Kubota-san had seemed to have adopted an attitude of “whatever”.

(Sounds of... well, a bed – you can figure it out for yourself)

Komiya: and – he really was cool, that guy! Some hoodlum punks from that group were intercepting our goods, and they attacked our dealing sites directly, but Kubota-san finished them all by himself... And then...

Girl: Wait!!!

(Sound of poor Komiya getting kicked)

Komiya: ow! What was that for?

Girl: Lately you keep telling stories of this Kubota-san!! Cut it out when we're in the middle of doing it! Jeeze... Could it be... You're gay like that?

Komiya: It's not like that... Ah! Crap! It's time for me to go meet Kubota-san!

(Sound of Komiya getting his pants back on)

Girl: Wha!!?

Komiya: Sorry, I gotta go!

Girl: Wait!!

Komiya: See you next time!

(Sound of Komiya running out)

Girl: What's up with that?

(Girl sighs, then lights a cigarette)

Girl: If he had to go, at least he could have made me come.

(Silence, then the sound of a busy Mahjong parlor)

Kubota: At times like that... do this.

(Sound of Mahjong tiles clicking together.)

Yakuza 1: Cool!! I couldn't see that coming at all!

Komiya: Seemed like slight of hand!!

Kubota: Well, that's the point of it.

Kasai: As usual, you'd be here, Makoto.

(Sounds of Kasai's footsteps)

Kubota: Ah, Kasai-san!

Kasai: Yo. It's been a while, hasn't it?

Kubota: Still lazing about on lunchtime?

Kasai: heh, naw. I've been moved to this area for a bit of work right now.

Kubota: What? I thought we could have a match, since it's been many days...

Komiya: Who is this, Kubota-san?

Kasai: Seems the sparrow doesn't know me... Unskilled, aren't you, Oniisan?

Komiya: What the hell?!

Kubota: Ah, cut it out. He'll arrest you.

Komiya: A cop? This guy?!

Kubota: One of the wicked police detectives that Japan is proud of...

Kasai: Hey, Makoto... You really joined up with the Izumokai?

Kubota: Yeah, well, it kinda turned out that way.

Kasai: Well, I really can't meddle in your way of living, but I didn't think you'd dedicate yourself to a group like that.

Kubota: Is that so?

Kasai: In any case, the name above yours in the family register... You're still his son. Well, I guess leadership ability is through lineage, surprisingly.

Komiya: uh....

Kubota: I don't remember having any leadership ability or whatnot...

Kasai: Hah. Is that so? Well, I'll get out of your way... (whispered) Be careful of the guy called Sanada in the Izumokai. He's a bastard that is corrupt to the core.

(Kubota sighs)

Kasai: See ya later.

(Sound of Kasai walking off, then fade in the sound of people)

Komiya: Wait, Kubota-san! Where are you going? You promised to go to the meeting place today, didn't you?

Kubota: Ah, I have some minor business. You coming with?

Komiya: Coming with, you say? I haven't returned to the cash businesses today... ah, wait!

Kubota: It's ok, it's ok!

Komiya voice over: Lately, this guy has been jerking me around like this.

(sound of footsteps, Komiya and Kubota's, then the sound of a collision)

Man: Hey! You! Running into me like that without an apology, huh?!!

(Sound of train arriving announcement)

Announcement: Please wait outside the white line...

Kubota: ...Who ran into who? (Buried by the announcement)

Man: Huh?

Kubota: Who ran into who?

Man: You bastard...!

Komiya: Kubota-san!

(Sound of an arm being broken – that just makes my arm ache, right there >< - silence, then the sound of a train leaving the station. Cue music along with the man in obvious pain)

Man: My arm... my arm!

(dramatic music)

Komiya voice over: Without hesitating, Kubota-san snapped the man's arm completely in half, like no one else could. He acted like nothing had happened, and was completely solemn, I could remember after that night. It was as if my eyes had taken a picture of Kubota-san, once he had finished. As if once the negatives were finished, the picture was colored with charcoal to a death ash color and brought out the white in that man's arm. Honestly, even I, who had become accustomed to this sort of thing because of the business, was bothered by that. Kubota Makoto was too dreadful... “Apathy” with “Cruelty”... if I thought about it...

(Silence, then the sound of swings)

Komiya: It seems bad... us eating ice cream in the park like this.

Kubota: Yeah. Seven Eleven's new merchandise.

Komiya voice over: Suspiciously like a common person, liking new things...

Kubota: But near the office, there isn't a Seven Eleven, is there...? The convenience store's new items are replaced in a three week cycle. Therefore, if you miss the chance and the new item doesn't sell, you won't see it again.

Komiya voice over: And he knows things that aren't useful.

Komiya: Ah. Is that so?

Kubota: Hey, give me a bite of yours.

Komiya: Huh? Ah, ok.

Kubota: Well, then, trade you for vanilla.

Komiya voice over: At first, I stuck with him with the intention of work... but now, I certainly had personally taken interest in this excessive man.

Kubota: How is it?

Komiya: huh?

Kubota: The Vanilla?

Komiya: Ah hah... it's good.

Kubota: oh? Then it's good you came!

Komiya (Talking to himself I think): By the way... that cop just now, how are you connected with him? He didn't seem like just an acquaintance, but...

(click of a lighter or something)

Komiya: Kubota-san... Just now, at the Mahjong parlor...

Kubota: Ah.

Komiya: Huh?

Komiya voice over: Kubota-san was staring at the corner of a tree in the park. When I looked, there was a little white furry shape.

Komiya: A cat... corpse?

Komiya voice over: Though it was still young, it looked as if some sort of monster had gotten hold of it, and the flowing blood coming from it's mouth had already turned to rust colored. There wasn't a reason, but I remembered it's internal organs covered with maggots.

Kubota: Yeah. Still a kitten... A stray dog probably did this to it.

Komiya voice over: Saying that, Kubota-san, with a tree branch, at his feet...

(Sound of digging)

Komiya: You mean... you're burying it?

Kubota: Yeah. Because... that time, I couldn't do it.

Komiya voice over: I... couldn't ask what that time was... and for some some reason or another I started helping him dig that grave. The sight of two high ranking Yakuza guys in the part at twilight, silently digging up the ground... If seen from nearby, it would be considered quite suspicious... it was block headed...

(sounds of the two of them putting effort into their work)

Kubota: Things like this... It's human ego, isn't it?

(Komiya laughs)

Komiya: It's ego, yeah.

(Cue music, and then Kubota chuckles. Komiya gasps.)

Komiya voice over: At that time... seeing what I would say was a slight innocent smile on Kubota-san's face... for some reason I hurt as if my heart was burning. I.. I don't really understand, but... This difficult to understand man... All I could think was “I want to be at this man's side.”

Track 5 – Dice 4

Komiya voice over: It was as if I gradually was becoming charmed by Kubota-san. It wasn't respect. It was a bit different than what I'd call longing. No matter what I called it, I had no explanation... but somehow I was charmed.

(sound of traffic)

Komiya: Kubota-san! Please don't fall asleep here! I won't be able to close the place up! Kubota-san!

Komiya voice over: This person, as if he was unconnected to the person I had been digging the grave with, was sleeping. No matter how unforgivable his expression, no matter how many times he seems to disturb me, I didn't mind. His muscles were relaxed as if he was just falling asleep. He had just returned from quickly doing the collection rounds at the whorehouses that I wouldn't do. It was a job I didn't enjoy that was entrusted with me by my position, and he had given me the pleasant surprise of having done it. I leaned over the back of the sofa that Kubota-san was laying on, getting closer. When I did that, Kubota-san suddenly opened his eyes and touched my face with his hand. It seemed like he was examining the bandages over my injuries, and he asked softly...

Kubota: Does it hurt?

(Komiya's gasp)

Komiya: Ku.... Kubota-san!

Komiya voice over: And then, he said something I didn't expect.

(sound of Kubota sitting up)

Kubota: I just met your mother.

Komiya: Huh? oh. Is that so?

Komiya voice over: What a surprising thing to say, I thought at that moment. Perhaps he had just come from my mother's shop, which was in our territories. My mother works at a whorehouse.

Kubota: How long has your mother been doing drugs?

(Komiya gasps)

Komiya: How do you know...

Kubota: Her pupils...

(Sound of Kubota lighting a cigarette and then taking a draw)

Kubota: And her perfume was really strong.

Komiya voice over: Other than Kubota-san, no one else knew it. That was probably the only thing I had a guilty conscious over.

Komiya: When I was in middle school, my dad died and my mother started at a sex shop. I think it was after that. This is the first time I've told anyone. Usually it doesn't bother me, but if she drinks and does drugs, I can't handle her anymore. And I always end up with these,

Kubota: Yeah.

Komiya: I joined this group because her shop was in it's territory. If I were involved in this group, I could get ahold of drugs easily and cheaply, right? But... it all fell apart, I think. It's stupid, isn't it? In order to help her, I deal drugs. It feels like it doesn't matter that we're mother and child...

Kubota: Yeah.

Komiya voice over: Kubota-san, saying nothing more than, “yeah”, kept silent and listened to me talk. He didn't preach, he didn't judge, as if it were something that he entirely had no interest in, he just patiently kept quiet and listened.

Komiya: Kubota-san... your family?

Kubota: It exists... in theory.

(Komiya gasps)

Komiya voice over: It was honestly great to hear “I have a family” from this person who never said anything about his everyday living or where his home was. Of course, when I thought about it later, I had had the feeling that this person's family was distant. But he hadn't ever said they were disconnected.

Kubota: Well, really, “It exists” is all there is to it. When I was in my house, “Don't be seen” was the rule, it seemed. Even if people were near, no one talked to me, and they averted their eyes. Thus, since I was born, my parents haven't talked to me one single time.

Komiya: That's... a little extreme, isn't it?

(Kubota exhales)

Kubota: Is it? But it doesn't really matter to me. If you never had something from the beginning, you don't want it. It doesn't hurt, it wasn't cruel. Caring for someone half-heartedly, surely that hurts, that's cruel.

Komiya: It's not just pain, is it?

Kubota: Yeah. But, I'm a coward, so...

(Kubota stretches, and then the sound of him laying down.)

Komiya: Uwaa! Wai... Kubota-san!?

Kubota: Ahh... exactly the right height.

Komiya voice over: Kubota-san put his head on my knee and was just as carefree as ever.

(Sound of Kubota being comfortable)

Komiya (under his breath): A person who could make Kubota-san hurt... does such a person exist?

(sound of Kubota sleeping)

Komiya: Ah, wai.... You fall asleep too fast!! You're not Nobita-kun!

(Komiya sighs – cue music)

Komiya voice over: The sleeping expression of this person who was defenselessly using my knee as a pillow, it was absurd... I realized it was strange, when thinking about the character of this cruel and ruthless man. Surely, even if this person was acting carefree or ruthless, I didn't think he was a puppet. Listening to me talk about my mother with kindness and the instigation of killing a person... to this person it was the same thing, I think. Mixing “Order” and “Chaos” and becoming nothing, a person like this town. When I looked at his too-peaceful, sleeping face, I felt like my chest was burning.

Komiya: I feel kinda strange... Kubota-san.

Komiya voice over: The fatigue from restraining my confused heart... would someday drive me crazy.

(Music fades, then the sound of traffic, and Komiya waking up.)

Komiya: Oh... Kubota-san.

Kubota: You awake? Well, it's still dawn. Want some coffee?

(Sound of Kubota pouring coffee)

Komiya: Ah, It's ok! I can pour it!

(Sound of cell phone ringing)

Kubota: Your cell phone's ringing.

Komiya: Yeah, it is. Excuse me.

(Sound of Komiya getting his phone and answering it.)

Komiya: Yes.

Komiya's Mother: Nobuo!! Help! Nobuo!

Komiya: Mom?!

Komiya's mom: Help... I'll be killed...

Komiya: Wait... Calm down! What's going on?

Komiya's mom: No! I'll be killed!

Komiya: Mom! Where are you now?!!

Komiya's mom: Sanchome's “A Girl”... Please, Hurry!

Komiya: Shit!

(Sound of Komiya running)

Komiya: I'm sorry! I'm going out for a bit!

(sound of him running out the door)

Kubota: Komiya? He's energetic from morning on, isn't he?

(Cue music and Komiya running)

Komiya voice over: Sanchome's “A Girl” is a love hotel near my mother's shop. Perhaps... she had gone there with a powerless customer and gotten in trouble, no doubt. I ran the whole way to the love hotel. This was, to my happiness, a shop run by our group. When I asked at the reception desk what room my mother was in, I was told it was a terribly run down room, number 207.

(Sound of Komiya running to the room, panting.)

Komiya: Here?

(sound of door being kicked in)

Komiya: Mom! Are you ok?

Komiya voice over: The instant I arrived in that room...

(Komiya gasps, then the sound of the assailant attacking Komiya, Komiya dodges the blow)

Komiya voice over: Abruptly, I was attacked from behind. I became aware of the blow and dodged it, and where he hit the wall, it crumpled in.

Komiya: Who are you!?

(Noise of opponent, then Komiya being punched.)

Komiya: Shit...What physical strength!!

Komiya voice over: Even though things might seem different, I was accustomed to fistfights, but this guy was a first. Though I couldn't see him clearly in the darkened room, even if I couldn't say he was tall, it wasn't that he lacked intensity. Even though he was a normal human no matter how you looked at him, I didn't think that the punch I received could have come from the same person. Thanks to the fact I had come from my background in the sex industry, I was able to flow with it, but even then I took considerable damage. Feeling like my life was in danger, I brought out my friend's pocket knife.

(Sound of the pocket knife coming out, and then the opponent's throat slashed.)

Komiya voice over: Then, when I realized what I was doing, it was already too late and I had slashed at him. His carotid artery was severed, I think. The blood was coming full throttle from his neck, and his mouth was gaping.

(sound of man gasping, then Komiya panting)

Komiya: Mom!!

Komiya voice over: I searched for my mother. The bedsheets were disturbed and at first I thought my mother was there. In the blankets, I saw the dress she had been wearing, and I thought she had passed away. Then I realized that the bathroom was locked, and I kicked it open.

(Sound of Komiya kicking in the door)

Komiya: Mom!!

Komiya voice over: In there, covering her head and shaking, was my mother.

Komiya: Hey! Get ahold of yourself! What happened!!?

Komiya's Mother: D...drugs...

Komiya: huh?

Komiya's Mother: Because he had good drugs... That man... a regular customer at the shop... He always brings the good drugs...So we came to this hotel... But after he took the drugs, suddenly he became violent... He grabbed my neck and squeezed... He was going to kill me...

Komiya: What were you doing!!? If it's drugs, I always bring them to you, don't I!!? What's wrong with that!!!

Komiya voice over: Then, at that time, I felt a presence behind me.

(Sound of man walking... )

Komiya thoughts: ... What's with this guy... His carotid artery's cut and he's still moving!!

Komiya: Shit!!

Komiya voice over: The man slowly came into the bathroom. I searched for my knife in my pocket, but realized I had dropped it in the other room and became pale. I wouldn't be able to fight him unarmed. Even so, I couldn't leave my mother. Like this, we'd both be killed. It would be my fault. And then...

(Sound of door being kicked in.)

Kubota: Ah-ah. Dirtying this place up like this... So rude to the cleaning staff...right?

Komiya: Kubota-san!

Kubota: Komiya, you move too quickly. Maybe I really am getting old...

(sound of Kubota kicking man)

Komiya voice over: Kubota-san, without hesitating at the sight of the man, kicked him so fast that he didn't seem to pause, to my eyes. The man didn't block, and fell over. As he was recovering, Kubota-san brought out a gun, quickly wrapped it in his scarf, and placed it against the man's head.

(Sound of a gunshot, and then mother screaming)

Komiya: Mom! Calm down! It's ok! It's ok now!

Kubota: And...

Komiya: Huh?

Kubota: What is this?

(Sound of Komiya gasping)

Komiya voice over: When I looked, the man's corpse had become blurred by fur that looked like a monster's, covering his whole body. With pointed claws that looked like a beast, he looked just like a wolf man from the movies.

Komiya: Kubota-san... That guy... is he human?

Komiya voice over: To me, the injured mass that was tumbled on the cold floor, the blood that flowed and wet that floor, seemed like that lineage. The scent of my mother, the iron scent of blood, and the scent of gun smoke permeated the bathroom. Feeling kinda like I should quickly run away from here, I began to sweat.

Track 6 – Dice 5

Komiya voice over: After that, in the time before the cops rushed in, a substitute from the youth division was prepared to be caught red-handed for the murder. Kubota-san raised his hand saying:

Kubota: But I was the one who did it...

Komiya voice over: But we hastily closed his mouth. Sanada-san ordered that Kubota-san was not to be surrendered over to the police.

(sound of sirens, then an office phone and noises, Kasai lighting a cigarette and taking a draw)

Kasai: Last time I saw your face across from here here you were a boy... Makoto.

Kubota: As usual, there's no tea pastries.

Araki: Should there be?

Komiya voice over: Kubota-san and I had been taken in by the police for investigation.

The one who was interrogating us was some older man called Kasai.

Komiya: Hey, Ossan!! Didn't we tell ya, this has nothing to do with us!! Why we gotta be here!? Don't you already got a suspect!!?

Kasai: Hmph. Nothing will result from taking down a dummy.

(Komiya gasps)

Kasai: At any rate, it doesn't really matter who did it. What we want to know is about that corpse.

Komiya: That's what we want to know! What was that, that monsterishly hairy guy?

Kubota: Kasai-san, we really weren't acquaintances with that man.

Kasai: Do you guys know about “W.A”?

Araki: Kasai-san!?

Komiya: “W.A”? What's that?

Kubota: Ah, I see... There's been lots of patrol cars in this district lately, and all the info as to why has been controlled. By Kasai-san's tone, the cops are clueless... Seeing corpses that resemble that brute seemed insignificant to everyone... Could it be that you're in the middle of an investigation involving incidents resembling that sort of case?

Araki: Kasai-san... What the hell is with this kid!?

Kubota: But... The other group is saying “We've got our hands on some good drugs, different from usual.”, right? That man, immediately after taking a dose of that drug, began acting violently. That being said, for about a month here, the cops have been focusing their emphasis on drug trafficking arrests. That taken into account, this “W.A” that you speak of... A new version of drug...? or not.

Araki: Look, you... We're supposed to do the investigating!

Kasai: Well, something like that... Actually, we don't have any more information that rumor... This is the 6th occurrence of a corpse that's been completely changed into an animal in that way. This was the only time we found them killed by a gun. The others were all reduced to hamburger as if their internal organs had exploded. While we were conducting a top secret investigation on that, a drug named “W.A” came up. Your Izumokai and the Toujou group divided this neighborhood. We could wash you guys up, but you guys don't really get involved in drugs like that. After all, “W.A” isn't a drug that would keep them coming back.

Komiya: I've never heard of it, seriously.

Araki: heh. So we're back to the drawing board.

Kasai: Well, it's all good. Makoto... Now, generally speaking, if you come to be involved with this drug, get ahold of me immediately. Before it becomes a burden to you, ok?

Kubota: Ok...

Kasai: Don't cause trouble.

Komiya thought: This Ossan really knows Kubota well, doesn't he...

(Sound of patrol cars, outside, and footsteps)

Kubota: Ah-ah. Anyhow, he could have at least had a patrol car take us back.

Komiya: What Yakuza gets escorted back to the office in a patrol car? ...Kubota-san.

Kubota: hm?

Komiya: I'm sorry for dragging you into some strange events.

Kubota: Don't worry, I got my own neck into it willfully. Ah, is your mom ok?

Komiya: Yeah... She's at the shop now. I think I'm going to investigate into this drug a bit. Though it's unrelated to me, I'm worried...

Kubota: By yourself?

Komiya: You really shouldn't get involved in it, Kubota-san. Just like that cop said...

(Sound of a car pulling up.)

Komiya: Ah. Boss Sanada...

(Sound of door opening)

Sanada: Are you going to get in?

Kubota: Ah, thanks...

Komiya: Ah, I'm good. I'm going to drop in at my mom's shop, to see her.

Kubota: Ok.

(Sound of Komiya running off)

Komiya: Kubota-san!! Thanks so much for everything. Please come to the office tomorrow also!!

(Sound of cell phone being dialed, then ringing)

Komiya: Ah! Kubota-san. Where are you now? Ah, then you're alone, right? I got ahold of a sample of “W.A” by following up on a trickle of information. Yeah, really. I'm going to the office now, so wait for me ok?

(Sound of walking, then rain starts falling.)

Komiya: Ah... it's raining.

(Fade out, then the sound of a door opening, Komiya gasping and then collapsing on the floor.)

Kubota: Komiya! What happened?

Komiya: I'm sorry... I was delayed. On the way I was taken captive... They took the drug... Probably... it was those Toujou bastards...

Kubota: I understand. Don't say anything more. I'll call the exclusive doctor now...

(Dramatic music starts)

Komiya voice over: I myself understood well that it was too late. Everything was becoming dim. My opened wounds were simply too hot. Strangely, I couldn't feel the pain anymore. As if I were drunk, my head felt settled and carefree. More than that, I felt something strange inside of me for this person... This person in front of me... Kubota Makoto... I was controlled by only that thought.

Kubota: Komiya...

Komiya: I couldn't see anything anymore... Everything had been dyed a pure black. I could only hear Kubota-san's voice close to my ear. I used that to keep going a little longer. The sound of the rain was nothing but noisy... Ah... It wasn't the sound of the rain, rather I thought it was a faint ringing of my ears... I lifted my arm that felt like it was made of lead and grabbed Kubota's coat at the knee.

Komiya: -San... Kubota-san... Kubota-san...

Kubota: Yeah...

Komiya: Heh heh...

Komiya voice over: Taking my fingertips into his hand from his cold knee, I felt him return my grip with a strong one. The heat that seems to be burning my heart... wasn't because of the wounds. My chest was so hot that I couldn't breathe...

Komiya: Kubota... San....

Kubota: Yeah.

Komiya voice over: The softness of the voice he made for me... I thought it was regretful that I couldn't see his face. Is he crying? Is he smiling? I didn't know. Just... other than Kubota-san being here, nothing mattered...

(Music starts)

Komiya: Kubota-san... You really shouldn't be in a place like this... You really shouldn't stay like this... You really shouldn't die a common death, in this sort of place, in this sort of way... I... I... With Kubota-san... Living...

(Rain starts pouring heavily)

Kubota: Yeah...

Komiya voice over: This... In this way, were the last words I heard. This was the last word that reached me. Would my voice reach him, reach Kubota-san?

Kubota: Yeah...

Komiya voice over: Kubota-san... I... you... (TN: The verb is left off... but this is commonly translated as 'I love...' from what I've seen. Technically the verb isn't there, so we'll never know, but the implication here is pretty heavy.)

Track 7 – Dice 6

(sound of traffic)

Sanada: You want to withdraw your membership?

Kubota: Yes.

Sanada: It seems that Komiya died. I wonder if that's the root cause? I didn't think you were the type to be moved by that sort of thing.

Kubota: ahh... It's strange to me, too.

Sanada: Are you certain this is what you want to do?

Sakaguchi: Hey, nii-chan. You say you want out of the house's activities.. Without doing anything? You gotta do something before you get out. Isn't that common sense?

Sanada: Well, that's what it's about. In this world of business, there are the old ways like removing a finger. But our house, we've wanted to stay away from that sort of vulgar technique.

Kubota: Well then, please give me the data on the Toujou group's Daikou... I don't know him by face.

Sanada: Fine. Prepare it, Sakaguchi.

Sakaguchi: Yessir.

(Sound of footsteps)

Sanada: Regretful, isn't it? With a little bit more time, you would have been mine.

Kubota: That's true...

Sanada: As usual, you reply without your heart. We'll meet again.

Kubota: Goodbye. (TN: Sayounara. This implies a more permanent goodbye.)

(Sound of a car driving, and then a phone ringing)

Sekiya: Yes, this is Sekiya.

Uzaki: Ah, it's me. What's up with it, that drug sample?

Sekiya: Right now they're hurrying the analysis, but we haven't been able to grasp it's origins no matter how hard we try. It was your failure that you let that Izumo youth slip before making him tell everything, Daikou.

Uzaki: Hmph. That's not a big problem. If you had waited to talk about it, then it would have been your fault, Sekiya. I would have thought you'd be thankful that you were given a position of management as Nanahikari's toy.

Sekiya: I'm greatly indebted for your honorable advice. Daikou, today, what will you do from here?

Uzaki: Segamihara. One of the members in my golf club is acquaintances with a member of the diet. Truly, no matter how many bodies agree with us, it's not enough.

(Sound of Sekiya hanging up)

Sekiya: (Chuckles) Take care of yourself.

(sound of an elevator arriving, and laughter)

Man: Is that so? To Segamihara? I hear the grass is good there...

Uzaki: Yeah. Anyhow, it's wide, and my legs...

(Sound of a gun being cocked)

Uzaki: Who are you?

Man: This kid...!!

(Gunshots, and men being shot, then cases hitting the ground... sound of the elevator closing)

Kubota: It's ego, yeah... (TN: This line is changed from the manga, where he said instead, “That time, I couldn't do it” - either way it refers to burying the cat – I won't go into an analysis of why the changed the line, here ^_^)

(Sirens, and police radio, and a car pulling up and idling)

Sanada voice over: Toujou group Yokohama Division office. Burned down, looks to be a work of arson. Inside, starting with Toujou group's Daikou Uzaki Hiroshige (51), 12 members of the clerks also died. Cause of death was by shooting as well as by beating. It looked like a dispute between gangsters... ?

(sound of footsteps)

Araki: Where are you going, Kasai-san?

Kasai: Probably Gang violence work. It's outside of our jurisdiction.

(Sound of Kubota whistling, and walking)

Kubota: Hm? Hey, are you alive?

(Sound of Tokito making unconscious noises. Kubota sighs.)

Kubota: I wonder if I'll have to carry him to my place...

(Sound of Kubota picking up Tokito)

Kubota voice over: I happened to pick up a cat. A splendidly large stray cat... that seemed like it'd be considerable trouble but it's life force seemed surprisingly strong... This time for sure I felt that the one to die first would be me...

Kubota: I still haven't learned... It was a little heavy.

Track 8 – a drug store

(Sound of Kou-san reading a newspaper and then the door sliding open, footsteps walk in)

Kubota: Hiya.

Kou-san: Welcome. It's been a while, hasn't it, since I've seen your face in this store... About a year, I wonder?

Kubota: Well, I've been busy with various things...

Kou-san: Things like the rotation of collection money from shops?

Kubota: What's this? You already know?

Kou-san: Are you looking for a part time job again?

Kubota: No... Today, I'm a customer. I've picked up some sort of large cat, but he's pretty weak and hasn't returned to his senses. There's reasons why I can't take him to the usual hospital... I'd like you to examine him.

Kou-san: I can do that... I do medical services at a special charge, but it's an expensive rate.

Kubota: It would help.

Kou-san: However, I'm unlicensed.

Kubota: I know.

Kou-san: Then, shall we go?

Kubota: Ah, also, Kou-san... One wok, please.

Kou-san: A wok that bullets come out of?

Kubota: Do you have some that bullets don't come out of?
